Great post! So true that people often act different vs what they say. This technique truly observes the actual behavior change - in a quick and scrappy way!

A bunch of folks have asked whether it would make sense to scale up this type of work as a consulting service for retailers. I think I would rather see the merchanidizing teams withing retailers implement it themselves. What do you think?

Simple, and brilliant.

(Does it have any effect on the shelf life of the pineapples?)

I am not sure it is a miss by the industry. there are many reasons pineapples are shipped the way they are. Mostly about keeping them fresh and make them endure harsh journeys. Stem and Leaves keep the fruit away from dehydration, mould, damage etc. Like it was pointed out in the article, fresh fruit consumption is a small portion compared to industrial usage in canning. And they use every trick in the book to reduce the costs. But applause to the marketing genuis behind changing the minds of the retailer. Passing on the cost savings of such efforts to consumers is a must in a sustainable economy.

@gagan thanks for your thoughts on this! When running trials of crownless fruit, I didn't see additional issues caused by crown removal. Do you have any data on this? I would love to take a look.
